Whether it’s the latest smartphone, laptop or tablet, many of us frequently replace our devices. But what do we do with our old ones? Did you know that discarding old electronics in the wrong way can leave your personal or business data vulnerable? That’s why it’s crucial to take the necessary steps to protect any sensitive information.

Understanding the risks

Think about what’s stored on your personal device right now. Our devices hold a goldmine of personal data, including emails, photos, financial and login details. Many think that by deleting these files or performing a basic factory reset will completely remove these from the device, but this isn’t the case. If someone has the right software, they can easily gain access to this deleted information.

How to securely wipe an old device.

To protect your data, follow these steps when disposing of electronic devices:

Back up important data

Before wiping your device, ensure that any important data is properly backed up. Transfer files to an external hard drive or a secure cloud service.

Wipe your data thoroughly

As mentioned above, a factory reset is often not sufficient to completely remove your data from a device. To ensure a device is completely cleared, it’s worth investing in professional software that meets recognised standards, such as NIST 800-88, to remove this data properly. It works by overwriting the existing data multiple times, making recovery virtually impossible.

For devices that allow encryption, consider enabling full-disk encryption before performing a reset, adding an extra layer of security.

Remove external storage and sim cards

Ensure to remove SIM cards, SD cards and external storage devices, as they may contain personal data. If these are no longer needed, ensure to securely dispose them.

Consider physical destruction

If your device contained highly sensitive information, often physical destruction can prove to be the most effective method of ensuring it can’t be infiltrated. You can consider shredding, degaussing (for magnetic drives), or drilling holes through hard drives to prevent data retrieval.

Recycling your device

Once you are confident your device is secure, consider the best way to dispose of it. As e-waste contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment if not properly handled, you may consider recycling your device. You can do this through e-waste recycling programs or manufacturer take-back schemes to ensure safe and eco-friendly disposal.

Properly disposing of old electronic devices is essential to protect your personal information and contribute to environmental sustainability. By following these steps, you can ensure that your data remains secure and that your devices are disposed of safely.
