Winter checklist - preparing your home for winter
Winter checklist
As the nights grow colder, our homes begin to feel more like sanctuaries. Our homes protect us – and they deserve protection in turn. Thankfully, when it comes to keeping our homes safe, a few smart fixes can make a big difference.
We've pulled together this checklist of practical ways to help keep your haven protected from the elements and the worst of the winter weather, so you can make sure you're doing your part.
1. Have you inspected your roof?
A well-maintained roof can help keep your energy bills down as well as keeping you dry. Inspect your roof regularly by looking for:
Missing tiles
Cracks
Moss
Signs of damp or internal condensation
2. Have you checked your doors and windows?
Your doors and windows are a vital defence against the cold weather, so keep them in good shape. Check them for:
Cracks
Leaks
Mould
Found any of the above? Make it a priority to get them fixed. Remember, everyday wear and tear isn't usually covered in policies, so staying on top of maintenance is essential.
If you spot gaps, you can install weatherproofing strips to help seal them up and stop cold air or water sneaking in.
3. Have you tackled any small repairs?
The trick with home repairs is to deal with them when they're small issues, not wait until they're big problems. Look out for:
Loose handrails
Chipped tiles
Frayed carpets
Uneven floorboards
4. Is your heating on?
Frozen pipes can cause serious damage. In 2023, the average cost of a frozen and burst pipe claim exceeded £17,0001 - a costly problem that's easy to avoid.
You should keep your heating on at a minimum temperature to prevent burst pipes and water damage, even when you're not at home. Make sure you read your policy terms and conditions, as there may be a requirement to keep your property heated to a certain temperature during the winter months.
5. Are your gutters cleared?
Blocked gutters can cause more than just a mess, as they can lead to damp, overflow, and treacherous icy patches. A quick clear-out now could save you a lot of hassle later.
Regular gutted cleaning may also be a requirement under your property insurance policy.
